Stop Paying the Founder Tax: 4 Open-Source Repos That Replace Your Early SaaS Bills

Early on, every tool wants a monthly fee, and your data ends up on someone else's servers. Open source now covers most of what a young startup needs. A recent guide lists more than 100 open-source alternatives across every category a startup touches. Here are four that solve real, daily founder pain.

1. Supabase: for founders who dread building a backend

The pain: Auth, a database and file storage can eat weeks before you ship a single feature.

The fix: Supabase is an open-source Firebase alternative built on PostgreSQL, so you get a real Postgres database instead of a proprietary one.

2. PostHog: for founders guessing how users behave

The pain: You don't know where users drop off, and sending their data to third-party analytics tools creates privacy headaches.

The fix: PostHog is an all-in-one open-source platform covering product analytics, session replays, feature flags, experiments and more. It is positioned as an open-source alternative to Mixpanel, Amplitude and Heap.

Watch out: Open-source deployments are meant for roughly 100k events per month. After that, the team recommends moving to PostHog Cloud.

3. n8n: for founders copying data between tools by hand

The pain: Leads in one app, invoices in another, alerts in a third, and you are the glue.

The fix: n8n lets you connect apps, APIs and AI models on a visual node-based canvas. You can run it on n8n Cloud or self-host it. It is fair-code under the Sustainable Use License, which keeps the source visible and self-hostable. That is not the same as classic open source, so read the license before you build a product on it.

4. Cal.com: for founders lost in scheduling back-and-forth

The pain: Booking calls by email wastes time, and scheduling subscriptions add up.

The fix: Cal.com is the open-source Calendly successor, and you stay in charge of your own data, workflow and appearance. The core is AGPLv3, while features such as SSO and Payments need a commercial license.
